25/07/09 Heckington 10 mile Report

Woke up on the morning of the race to bright blue skies! The race was set to start at 10.00am however the info supplied by the organisers suggested getting there in plenty of time. So arriving at 9.20am we set off to find the start area. Heckington village show looked great something out of ‘Mid Summer Murders’! Animal shows, Vegetable, cake and flower displays with judging. Lots of stalls, livestock, classic cars & tractors, loads of stuff. Including of course the 10 mile running race as well as tug of war and cycling races.

The race started at 10.00am prompt on a grass arena which we did one lap of until leaving the showground into the village itself. The route was two laps of a very flat course the weather was very hot but there were plenty of water stations I was not expecting a quick time but on entering the village for the last time with less than half a mile to go it looked as though I might get under the 75 minute mark. Passing the church I felt somebody on by shoulder so kicked a bit and entered the showground feeling quite fresh. However the arena was grassy slightly uneven and the last 50 metres were hard work! I crossed the line in 1 hour 14 minutes and 36 seconds just under 75 minutes, very pleased!

I managed to get a sun burnt face but had fun!

A venison burger later I spent a good couple of hours looking round the show before going back to my Dads for a shower and a rest (also checking the footie results, Notts beat the red team from the wrong side of the Trent!! Huzzah!). 7.30pm and it was off to a party and a good time a few bottles of Spitfire, some interest from a laydee and then back to bed for a good nights sleep.

A good weekend and a new pb of 1:14.36 for ten miles.
